The Importance of Knowledge

To start off, I'm going to warn you that my blog today is going to be pretty blunt with the message I have chosen to share with you, because it is something that needs to be treated seriously and not as a joke. This topic has broken up so many families and continues doing so because many people, especially your children, don't know what it is, how to handle it and how to fix it.
My topic I'm going to talk to you about today is pornography.

Years ago, pornographic images were only found in magazines at the store. Now, years later, porn is everywhere! Technology, on billboards we pass by while driving, in music we listen to, in books we read, and even in the words we hear each day. This horrible addiction is everywhere!

As parents, our job is to protect our children. To teach them of the worldly things and how we can best prepare them for the future. I know pornography may be an awkward conversation, especially with kids under the age of ten, but all ages are affected by pornographic material. Some places the teachers in schools are teaching children at age 5 how to masturbate themselves because it's healthy for them to know how to do that, and at age 11 they are being taught different positions for sex, otherwise they aren't going to have a healthy sexual relationship when they get older.

Since you can't fully protect your children from pornography, you can help them to understand the importance of staying away from it and the reasons why. Your children are never too old, or too young to learn about this topic. Teach your children the best way to handle porn when they come across it. For example, our bodies are special. They are a gift and they are not to be treated in such a crude manor. We keep our bodies sacred because they are temples, we don't need to put filth in our bodies because it doesn't do us any good. If you don't teach your children the importance of staying away from pornography, when they do run into it somewhere, they may react wrongly to the material, and easily become addicted without knowing it.

Let me share a short personal example with you of what I am trying to say. When I was a freshman or sophomore in high school I loved reading! I had gotten a kindle recently and I loved being able to read from a neat device just like my mom! One day I was exploring my reading possibilities, reading the titles to see which ones sounded interesting. A certain title caught my attention, Love Potion. I had seen the movie, Love Potion Number 9, and I based the similarities off of the movie to the book. I figured it would be a very interesting book and maybe a link somehow to the movie.

My new book was very interesting, dealing with a girl in college who was being stalked by some guy she had seen on the streets after her classes. About half way through the book the main girl character found a boyfriend, and the book went into great detail of what happened with the girl and her new boyfriend. I continued reading the book because I wanted to know how it ended. I wanted to know what happened to the stalker guy and if the girl was safe or not. To be honest, I didn't know what was going on, I thought the book was kind of disgusting in those certain situations and it had a strange effect on me like nothing had before. I didn't know why, I didn't know what was going on with my body, I was only trying to read a book and because I wasn't totally sure, I kept reading.

Let me touch on some certain things now. I was between the ages of 14 and 16 years old. I lived in a small, very protective town where almost everyone is Mormon. Again, I didn't know what was going on. My parents didn't know what I was reading because I was using my kindle. My mom didn't know we even had that book because with kindles, we get a set of free books and Love Potion was one of them.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love my parents to death! But my parents, didn't teach me much about pornography. I was not mentally, or spiritually prepared to deal with what I had just gone through. It wasn't till months later down the road that I finally told my mom what happened because I felt so ashamed of it once I found out what I had read.

All I ask, is that you protect your children.

The Importance of Rules & Roles

Growing up, I thought my parents didn't allow us to do a whole lot in our small town. It's the small type where everyone knows everyone and their kids. I was always frustrated why we couldn't have sleep overs or go to a friend's house during certain days of the week, or why my sisters and I couldn't play tag in the stores, or go up the escalators that were coming down. These things are all so much fun and my parents were just sucking the fun out of all of them. I felt like we couldn't do anything. I wasn't happy about a few things in life, and I didn't understand why my parents had so many rules until I got a little older. In my home we have rules. These rules don't suck the fun out of our lives, but they are there to keep each one of us safe and protected, to keep order in the home, for the most part. Another reason we have rules is because they help all ten of us become more united by understanding each other and their situations, we can relat...
